A River and a Tree

Made during a Residency at The Sidney Nolan Trust, The Rodd, Near Presteigne, 2014.
Please turn the sound on
Hindwell Brook, Poplar and Hazel, 25m long.
The articulated tree moves with the flow of the river. A stand of very straight poplar trees had recently been felled on the river bank nearby. I worked with short sections of these trees, adapting a flexible joint that I had originally devised for ‘Passing through No Man’s Land’ in Fukuoka, Japan.
The sound of the river is taken from underwater via a length of plastic tube, mixed with the sound from above the surface. The faint sound of a quarry siren can be heard in the distance.
